there hasn't been a serious thought in my head in ten years. the silence is quite deafening. i remember being 7 years old and sitting in the back of the car, looking out the window at a junco on the telephone wire. i thought 'today i'm seven and my brother is 9 and i'm going to remember this moment for a very long time'. at least that one stuck. and i remember being about 9 years old and playing with some friends in their backroads house. and i remember an overwhelming depression and crying that i felt like a very small mouse and i was scared to death that g-d's very large shoes would one day crush me till i was nothing. i don't remember the parents' reaction to finding all us kids in the bedroom, sitting in a circle, writing our thoughts down for posterity. i kept the note in my raincoat pocket for a few years and then one day decided it wasn't something to hold on to. i think that was also the day i learned the bloody bones and dirty diapers joke. baby wants a cookie but they're in a jar on the shelf of the nursery. baby tells brother that he wants a cookie and brother goes to the shelf and stands on a chair and reaches for the cookie jar. the jar says 'bloooooody bones and dirty diapers!' and brother is so scared, he falls off the chair and then runs out screaming. mama comes in the room and baby asks for a cookie. mama reaches for the cookie jar and hears the same 'blooooooody bones and dirty diapers!' and promptly faints. baby is upset. daddy comes in and attempts to satisfy baby's craving for cookies... and hears the same creepy 'bloooooooody bones and dirrrrrrty diapers!!'. he runs down the stairs. baby finally crawls over to the chair and climbs on top of it. baby manages to scramble onto the shelf and reaches for the cookie jar. the cookie jar moans out the same 'bloooooody bones and dirty diapers!' threat. whereupon the baby replies 'you keep your bloody bones and i'll keep my dirty diapers' and snatches the cookies. hello memory. |
